Bessie ("Boo-Boo")
x
Bessie is a 3-year-old Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound). She came to us from her breeder at the age of 17 months. Her breeder had shown her a few times, but Bessie is smaller than what is normal for her breed, and once she was too old to enter the puppy classes, this became apparent and kept her out of the winner's circle. Her small size is due to an accident she had while rough-housing with her sire when she was 9 weeks old. He jumped in the air and whirled around (something sight-hound breeds do a lot during play), and caught her across the muzzle with his hock (the lower part of his back leg). This resulted in a broken jaw for little Bessie, which required surgery, and had to be wired shut for several weeks during a crucial growth period. It also resulted in her lower canine teeth not erupting after she lost her puppy teeth.
Although I'm sorry for the pain and trauma Bessie (and her loving breeder) went through during that time, I'm so glad it resulted in Bessie coming to us. Bessie is an absolute joy. She is funny, affectionate, well-mannered and friendly to all humans and other dogs, and she wins over everyone she meets. We love her dearly. She is the little Princess of our dog household, and of our hearts. |
