Pastel Painting Class:
"Pastel Painting with a Punch!"
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Description: Whether you have always wanted to learn Pastel, or whether you like using the medium but have not been satisfied with the impact of your results, this 5-week class is for you! Pastels have sometimes had the reputation for being a "wimpy" medium, with a pale or scratchy appearance. Nothing could be further from the truth of the pastel medium's potential! In this class, you will learn to create pastel "paintings" with as much clout as you want them to have. We will explore various techniques of application, experiment with different pastel papers, and create paintings in both a colorist technique and in a tonalist technique. You will learn many universal artistic principles, at the same time you learn to successfully handle the medium of pastel!
Schedule: Early 2010
Cost:
$175* (to be refunded in full if class is cancelled)
$50 deposit required to reserve a spot in the class (non-refundable, unless class is cancelled) , with balance due on first day.
* All of your pastel paper & other surfaces will be provided by instructor, included in this cost.

Pastel Painting Workshop:
"The Tonalist Approach to a Pastel Still-life Painting"
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Description: An intensive weekend workshop (9am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, with a 1 hour lunch break), in which the student will learn to create a realism-based still-life painting in pastel, using the principles of "Chiaroscuro," so favored by the Italian and Dutch masters. This style of painting, whether in oil paint or in pastel, imparts an effect of glowing light, depth and volume (rather than the look of flatness), and an intense feeling of "being there," not found in any other style of painting.
Schedule: Early 2010
(Exact date to be announced soon. Please ask to be placed on my e-mail list if interested.)
Location: To be announced.
Cost: $150

Oil Painting Classes:
"Taking the Fear Out of Oil Painting--The Seven Keys to Better Paintings."
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Description: A series of eight weekly classes (each class two-and-a-half hours long), designed to give the student a sound foundation in traditional representational oil painting principles and techniques, helping to eliminate the fear of failure which can be caused by lack of confidence ("I don't know what to do next" syndrome). The students will not paint from photos, but will learn to conquer the fear of painting from life!
Each week we will concentrate on one of the Seven Keys, with short lectures and demo's on each one, and hands-on painting exercises for the students. In our last 2 classes we will concentrate on completing a still life oil painting, from a live studio set-up. We may also have a class field-trip to a nationally acclaimed gallery if enough students are interested.
NOTE: This class prepares the student for my on-going "Atelier-Style" oil-painting class, described above.
Schedule: Early 2010 (exact date to be announced after Christmas)
Class time: to be announced
Location: Mary Nichols Art Center, Smithville, Texas
301 Burleson, Smithville, TX 78957

Atelier-Style Oil Painting Classes:
Description:
An on-going class, meeting every Tuesday morning, and conducted in the manner of European Ateliers, and in the American tradition of such schools ("ateliers") as William Merritt Chase's New York School of Art (which later became known as the still-running Art Student's League), theShinnecock School of Art, run by Chase and later by Robert Henri, and the Cape Cod School of Art, run by Charles Hawthorne, and later by artist Henry Hensche.
In this class, 2 or more still-life set-ups will be ready in the classroom, and students will arrive, choose a spot, and go straight to work painting the set-up of their choice, at their own pace. The instructor will circulate and help each student, as well as demonstrating on her own canvas when needed, much the same as the format of a week-long "workshop" situation. A new still life will be added to the classroom on regular intervals, and students may work on any of the available set-ups they wish.
This class has been very successful, and develops a feeling of casual familiarity among the students, unlike a more regimented class. It's a very friendly and fun class!
Level:
Intermediate to Advanced
NOTE: I highly recommend that, before taking this class, students take my oil painting class:
"Taking the Fear Out of Oil Painting--The Seven Keys to Better Paintings."
The Atelier-Style classes require familiarity with the concepts taught in "...The Seven Keys..." class. I prefer all Atelier students to take the "Keys" class first, but of course there will be exceptions made for students who already are at the intermediate or advanced level, or who have taken private lessons with me, and demonstrate knowledge of these principles. If you are in doubt as to which class would best suit you, please email me ( jneef@austin.rr.com) or call me at (512) 303-3581, so we can get you in the class you will benefit from the most.
Schedule: Early 2010, watch this page for exact dates
Class Time: 9:30am to 12 noon
Cost: $30 per class (pay at the door, at the beginning of each class)
Location: Mary Nichols Art Center, Smithville, Texas
301 Burleson, Smithville, TX 78957
